“Music sets me free. Every single day.”

Personally, 2021 was a year of especially extreme highs and lows. It has felt like a dream and a nightmare, at the same time. If I  were to wake up, which would I be living? Both. This is life – peaks and troughs; nothing lasts forever, good or bad. Resilience is key, no matter what comes your way, have faith in yourself – tell yourself “this too shall pass” and that  “you’ve got this.” Try to find a way to get some perspective, it really could always be worse. Think about what blessings you do have. Do not lose faith in yourself. Sometimes you can’t see the sun; that doesn’t mean it isn’t there. It will rise tomorrow and the day after and the day after that, ad nauseum. I reminded myself of this over and over in 2021. There is no other option but to keep pushing – things will come right –  maybe tomorrow, maybe the day after or the day after that. Just keep going.

Music sets me free every day. At the very least it may well have saved my sanity multiple times  these past few years. It connects us, keeps us from despair, reminds us of loved ones no longer with us, of good times gone by. It has distracted me from my worries, given me solace, and has moved my body on many a dance floor – celebrations of life, love, community, freedom and movement.

Where would we be without music. It doesn’t bear thinking about.
