Civilization: The Way We Live Now at Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia
Exhibition opens 13 Sep 2019 and runs until 2 Feb 2020.
Civilization: The Way We Live Now is an international photography exhibition of monumental scale, featuring the work of over 100 contemporary photographers from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe with over 200 original photographs being exhibited.
In this increasingly globalised world, the exhibition explores photographers’ representations of life in cities as its key theme and presents a journey through the shared aspects of life in the urban environment. The selected works create a picture of collective life around the world and document patterns of mass behaviour. The exhibition looks at the phenomenal complexity of life in the twenty-first century and reflects on the ways in which photographers have documented, and held a mirror up, to the world around us.
A major publication is being produced by Thames & Hudson in parallel with the exhibition.
Open 10am-5pm daily.

Frankie McNair is a comedy gremlin with “Fun Aunt” energy. In 2019 she debuted her first solo show Frantasia to sell-out crowds at The Canberra Comedy Festival, performed to sell-out crowds at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and was a Raw Comedy State Finalist.
Frankie is also one-half of comedy duo Sweaty Pits, who won the 2018 Sydney Fringe Festival “New Zealand Tour Ready Award” and nominated for “Best Comedy” at the 2018 Melbourne Fringe Festival with their show Pity Party.

Kaws: Companionship in the Age of Loneliness at NGV International.
Exhibition opens 20 Sep 2019 and runs until 13 Apr 2020.
Open 10am–5pm daily.
In an Australian first, this exhibition is a comprehensive survey of 25 years of the oeuvre of the New York artist known as Kaws, full of humour, hope and humanity, celebrating his ability to connect with broad audiences.
The full range of Kaws’ artistic output will be on display, featuring more than 100 works including iconic paintings reappropriating pop-culture figures to his more recent large-scale abstract works, and an impressive collection of his celebrated sculptural figures.
Kaws engages with universal feelings of isolation and loneliness through his works, in reaction to the turbulent world we live in today. His larger-than-life sculptures are playful, toy-like figures. However, at a closer look, they reveal a fragility and darkness in the vulnerable poses of the characters.
Brian Donnelly (born 1974), aka KAWS, is one of the most prominent and prolific artists of his generation. His body of work straddles the worlds of art and design to include paintings, murals, large-scale sculptures, street and public art, and graphic and product design. His work is infused with humour, humanity and affection for our times. Admired for his larger-than-life sculptures and colour-filled paintings, KAWS’s cast of hybrid cartoon and human characters are drawn from pop-culture animations and form a distinctive artistic vocabulary.

There are few joys in life like embracing the embarrassing, stripping it of its power and putting it on display before anyone else can.

After sell out shows across Australia the storytelling sensation returns to Melbourne for another season.

In August of 2018 Quick had been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (also known as ALS) Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that erodes motor neurons – cells in the brain and spinal cord that control muscular function – until it becomes difficult or impossible for a person to walk, talk, speak, swallow and breathe. Please read the message from Quick:
To all my friends who have noticed I’ve been kind of quiet over the past year or so. In August of 2018 I was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (also known as ALS) so my life has changed dramatically. I haven’t told many people and only just recently informed my family. I kept expecting and hoping things to get better, but sadly they haven’t.
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that erodes motor neurons – cells in the brain and spinal cord that control muscular function – until it becomes difficult or impossible for a person to walk, talk, speak, swallow and breathe. Stephen Hawking had managed to live a long time with this cruel disease but most affected die within a few years, some within months.
Unfortunately, I am told there is no cure.
My symptoms began in 2017 when I lost the ability to hold a guitar pick and had to cancel a gig. I remember being so upset because that gig was going to be my first ‘unplugged set’ with just me & my Martin guitar. Never did I imagine things would get worse. During that time I also started experiencing very painful debilitating cramps all over my body. They would strike without warning which made living a normal life very challenging. Day-to-day activities were becoming too difficult, even driving to work eventually became too risky. I tried working from home for a few months but ultimately was let go in December 2018.
To the casual observer I might appear completely fine. Although my right hand and arm have lost strength to do the most simple tasks like brushing my teeth, tying my shoes or even putting on deodorant and feeding myself to name a few. My left arm and hand started showing symptoms six months ago and continues to weaken every few weeks.
I am currently receiving the best care Australia can provide from a team of specialists at The Bethlehem Hospital. I’m also seeing a highly esteemed Naturopath who is helping me fight this disease through natural means. His pain management supersedes anything suggested by western medicine with zero toxicity, however at tremendous cost. I’ve been told this disease is ‘incurable’ however there are experimental treatments in other countries like Israel & Germany which have well documented successful reversal of all symptoms, but I could not realistically entertain the idea of trying any international treatment when many times I have to choose between putting food on the table or buying medicine.
I have been fighting this with everything I have but I must admit, at times there is much sadness and it can be hard to keep it together. The thought of not seeing the kids grow up is scary and depressing, one that I struggle with the most.
Thank goodness I have many wonderful friends and a very loving supportive family, which helps me to stay strong & positive through this difficult journey. Overall I would say I’m doing very well given my circumstances.
My whole life I’ve been entrenched in music so not being able to express myself through my music has been very difficult for my soul. I’ve lost the ability to play guitar, bass, keys and even DJing can be difficult these days. Recording my weekly radio show has been challenging… but it’s my last creative outlet that helps to keep me feeling connected to my music and the world.
I am a very private man and the idea of inviting the world into my personal life has been a very difficult decision. Discussing it has only heightened the reality of this brutal disease, however as my condition worsens I’ve gotten to a point where I need to reach out for help and additional support. Not only for myself but for my family.
PS: To any close friends who have tried to contact me, please understand that typing on the computer is very challenging these days so I might not be able to get back to you quickly.
He is currently receiving the best care Australia but has been told this disease is ‘incurable’ there are experimental treatments in other countries like Israel & Germany which have well documented successful reversal of all symptoms but the costs to pursue such treatment is a struggle with a family and two daughters to think about also.
Please come to this special fundraiser party or hit the go fund me to help support this very special human bean and his fight against Motor Neuron Disease!!!!
After the wonderful success of the Phil K fundraiser when word reached us about local producer and friend Quick aka PQM the crews quickly banded together to reach out and raise awareness for an urgent and super important cause.
We would like to hope that through this fundraiser we could elevate some of that financial strain on Quick and his family and also maybe even look to the chance of seeking further treatment, he is unable to work so we as a community once again feel that we can all make a difference if we come together once more through the music that brought us all into each others life’s.

DEEP, DARK & DANGEROUS MELBOURNE OCTOBER 5TH
FT TRUTH (NZ) / Khiva (CAN) / Sepia (UK)
Dubstep powerhouse Deep, Dark & Dangerous heads down under for their first ever New Zealand and Australia tour. Fresh from making waves (bass waves) across the North American and European festival circuit, label bosses Truth are heading back to the best place on earth, and bringing two of their favourite DDD comrades with them!
Truth should need little introduction having (among other things) put New Zealand on the worldwide Dubstep map, won a NZ music award and started a keystone label within the current bass music scene . They have been holding down the 140bpm (and beyond) for over 10 years and have taken the Aotearoa sound to all corners of the globe. Situated between Los Angeles and Christchurch Truth have released countless singles on some of the most respected foundational labels in the genre such as Tempa and Deep Medi, as well as 4 critically acclaimed albums. Aside from pouring themselves into their music and their DJ sets, the last few years have seen Truth set up Deep, Dark & Dangerous… and take the bass music world by storm.
Khiva is a rising star and key member of the Deep, Dark, & Dangerous camp, having just released her much anticipated “Butterfly Effect” 12” on the label, the follow up to her “In The Quiet” and “Fresh Cut Love” releases. Her bass driven deep dark sets have earned her a rapidly growing following, garnering her the monkiers “Duchess of the Deep”, “Queen of Darkness” or just “Queen Khiva” among her fans.
Khiva made her NZ debut at Northern Bass 2018, impressing many. But this is her first full tour down south!
Making his NZ and Australian Debut is one of the most respected producers in the underground scene: Sepia. For the past 10 years he has been building his empire though his high octane, multi-genre sets and deep, dark & sometimes meloncholic production. With a hefty back catalogue spread across labels such as Deep, Dark & Dangerous, System, Infernal Sounds, Wheel & Deal, White Peach and Green King Cuts to name a few, he shows no sign of slowing down.

This November 8-10, the musical mecca will host the cream of the electronic crop as Faithless is set to join Puerto Rican house lords and DC10 favourites, The Martinez Brothers at the top of the bill. The DJ set from Faithless, will take guests on a euphoric journey celebrating the band’s biggest hits from 20 years at the top. ‘Insomnia’, ‘God is a DJ’, and ‘We Come One’ are not only timeless classics, but song titles befitting the Return to Rio revelry at large.
The lovingly crafted line-up continues with Argentina’s El Maestro, Hernán Cattáneo who will be reunited with dead-set legend Nick Warren for a very special performance. Widely touted as the hottest back-to-back duo on the planet right now, the pair will be making a triumphant return to Australia in honour of this year’s event.
The sanctuary from sanity will also be soundtracked by Acid Pauli, the musical wizard who transverses the whimsical, fantastical and melodic tempos of house and techno. Notorious for performances in magical places like Tulum’s jungles and Black Rock City, Acid Pauli’s well known on The Playa and his sets are a highlight of Burning Man.
Riopians making the pilgrimage, are in for ‘A Little Bit of Luck’, as DJ Luck & MC Neat take over the ‘Masterblaster’ for a house and garage re-wind like no other. Literally, ‘There Ain’t No Stopping Us.’
The infamous Rio pool party will be returning, but unlike ever before with prominent party-starter, Nightmares on Wax bringing his sun-drenched dubbed out soul DJ set to the banks of the Hawkesbury.
Following Lee Burridge’s much-lauded closing performance of last year’s event, fellow All Day I Dream alumni, Sebastien Leger and Lost Desert are stepping up to the plate to cast a dreamy spell over the main stage, with their laidback house and eclectic grooves.
Dancefloor detonators, Eli & Fur have been snared too. These in-demand DJ divas, who are firm favourites of the Anjunadeep fold, write and play their own tracks, mixing house and dance beats.
Long-standing Rio resident, the legendary Mr C AKA the Shamen behind ‘Ebeneezer Good’ is back for another edition, bringing ‘Superfreq’ right-hand man, David Scuba along for his first rodeo.
Next up is the NeoAfroFuturisticPsychedelicSurrealisticHippys, The Illustrious Blacks. Monstah Black and Manchild Black are a ridiculously fun married combo, inspired by Prince, Grace Jones and Boy George, on a mission to fuse futuristic funk, hypnotic house and cosmic pop into pulsating positivity for the planet.
Finally, as part of his quest to champion the best beatmakers in the business, Master of Mischief, Ricky Cooper has also cherry-picked a couple of his favourite producers making massive waves in the underground, German duo Super Flu and vibe vixen Miss Melera.
More than just music, Return to Rio is The Ultimate Weekend Away, a refuge from the real life and a shindig quite unlike any other.

From power ballads to off-kilter dance numbers, Molly Nilsson constantly pushes the limits of what is conventionally considered a ‘pop’ song.

KEITH HARING | JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT
In an unprecedented, world premiere exhibition, the National Gallery of Victoria presents the work of two of the most significant and influential artists of the late 20th century. Exclusive to Melbourne, the exhibition offers new and fascinating insights into the artists’ unique visual languages and reveals, for the first time, the many intersections between their lives, practices and ideas. The exhibition surveys each artist’s tragically short, yet prolific career through more than 300 artworks, including works created in public spaces, painting, sculpture, objects, works on paper, photographs and more.
Exhibition opens 1 Dec 2019 and runs until 13 Apr 2020.
Open 10am–5pm daily.
