Melbourne DJ and producer MorningMaxwell has launched his highly anticipated debut album SWIM.
Spanning a range of genres including house, dance, rock, rap, funk, and disco, SWIM doesn’t hesitate and demands pure, unadulterated good times from first splash. The 14 track album includes hit singles Feel Dat w/ Young Shogun, Bored w/ R.EM.EDY and Wake Me Up w/ Jade Alice. SWIM encompasses everything that has led MorningMaxwell to this moment, and just like the artist himself, freestyles in a lane of its own.
SWIM was born out of a determination to stay connected during Melbourne’s COVID-19 lockdowns. “Diving into new collaborations and connections during that time was what I truly needed and in hindsight, it’s what Melbourne needed too!” Max said he hasn’t followed the traditional streams that many artists do. “I’m self-managed and don’t work with a label, I’ve stuck to my own lane and sometimes that has required swimming upstream, which is tough but very rewarding!”
MorningMaxwell began his career managing a band and performing as a club DJ in 2015 and quickly realised that in order to make the music he wanted to play, he’d need to work with live instruments. “Collaborating with musicians, vocalists and players is like being part of a team and working towards a shared vision, to make great art,”“In Melbourne there is such an undercurrent of emerging artists, and a big part of SWIM was about connecting people within the ocean that is the music industry.”
MorningMaxwell has jammed a lot into the last few years, including a 9-show tour of regional Victoria, a headline show at The Nightcat, festival slots including Grapevine Gathering, Beyond The Valley and Keep It Together, international shows in Bali and Fiji and playing with acts such as Touch Sensitive, KLP, Client Liaison, Benson, Kah-Lo, and The Veronicas.
To celebrate SWIM, MorningMaxwell has announced his accompanying launch show at iconic Melbourne venue, The Corner Hotel on Saturday 22 April, and it’s set to be a beauty. With a full band in tow, including vocalists, rappers, horns and bass, MorningMaxwell’s biggest show to date is not to be missed. “This music should cleanse you,” said Max. “When people listen, I want them to feel as strong, stoked and grateful as I feel when I make music, and of course after a swim.”
SWIM is available to stream from 13 April on all platforms.
