Presented by DJ Nish Diaz CHASE THE BASS is a story of UK bass culture, its foundations, its collisions, its mutations and its continuing international exchange.

From Jamaican sound-system culture and dub to the rave explosion of the late 1980s and thebass-heavy scenes that followed, CHASE THE BASS explores how Britain became a major site for the development of bass-driven music — and how those sounds continue to travel, mutate and influence music around the world.

This is not a history of one genre. It is a story of connection.

British bass culture developed through encounters between Caribbean sound-system traditions, Black British communities, American music, British club culture, new technologies, pirate radio and local scenes. These influences did not produce one continuous musical line. They produced a network of overlapping scenes whose relationships changed over time.

The programme follows five broad sonic movements:

Jungle / Drum & Bass
Garage / Grime / Dubstep
Global Cross-Pollination

The categories are designed as musical environments rather than rigid historical periods.
Genres overlap, influence one another and often develop simultaneously.
At the centre of the story is the bass.

Not simply bass as a frequency, but bass as a physical, technological and cultural
experience.
