MORE ABOUT THE EVENT
It’s that time of year! Melbourne Tomato Festival 2017
19th March 2017
10 am to 6pm
All Nations Park Northcote

Nothing defines Italian Culture in Melbourne more than the backyard tomato harvest and suburban garage sauce making.

Since 2015 The Grossi Family through The Melbourne Tomato Festival brings this positive childhood memory to the wider community in support of multiculturalism and preservation of cultures and customs through food. Also, social well-being through connecting people to each other with food.

Our friends at Perfection are growing 2 tonne of juicy tomatoes ready for hundreds of enthusiasts to join the team at Home Make It in crushing and bottling their own passata.

As a principal partner, The City of Darebin is excited to welcome The Melbourne Tomato Festival to Northcote in 2017 as part of its increasing repertoire of events, experiences and a culturally vibrant precinct.  Over the next few weeks you may see a snapshot of the passata making that is to come with the support of Preston Market and Preston Central.  A vibrant community, well known for the fresh food centre and multicultural eating houses.

The event welcomes back the involvement of Capi – award winning Australian mineral water with their famously created Capi tomato and basil gin and tonic, The Napoleone family with Punt Road wines, who through their winery, orchards, brewery and cider house, are committed to creating the most exceptional beers, ciders and wines in the Yarra Valley and for The Melbourne Tomato Festival.

How we grow our food or where we source it from has a great impact on our health, lifestyle and future. Our food traditions define our culture, our family and ultimately us as individuals.

It is in keeping with this ethos that we gather together our local producers, community and champions of all things Italian to celebrate what has become known as ‘National Italian Day’ –the making of the passata or the Melbourne Tomato Festival.

It is a gathering of local farmers selling produce with thanks to Melbourne Farmers Markets, speakers, agriculturalists, cooking demonstrations, Italian food, artisan producers, special guests, history, workshops, entertainment and of course passata making.

A snapshot of our program includes:

Demonstrations by Guy Grossi, Karen Martini, Colin Fassnidge, Frank Camorra, Matt Wilkinson and Massimo Mele.
Tomato Talks and Workshops hosted by Hilary McNevin include Polito Wood Fired Ovens, That’s Amore Cheese, Woodstock with live gnocchi making, Alice In Frames (Alice Zaslavsky), Melbourne Rooftop Honey – importance of bees, Bruce Burton Milking Yard Farm – permaculture and sustainable farming, Madelaine Eggs and Oliver Shorthouse, Ramarro Farm, our backyard hero Mario Di Natale with Darebin Backyard Harvest Festival and more.

Some of Melbourne’s best street food to enjoy on a lazy Sunday including Gelato Tino, Woodstock, Elyros, Saluministi, That’s Amore, Bar Idda, Scott Picket Estelle, Bar Nonno, Ufuculari, Burn City Smokers, Levita, Craft and Co, 400 Gradi, Craft and Co, Madame Croquettes, many more and also introducing Pezzo.

The day begins with an official opening ceremony and Welcome To Land by Wurundjeri Elder Ian Hunter.  There is an extensive farmers market supported by Melbourne Farmers Market , children’s activities, children’s cooking classes and The Scrims folk band from 3pm for lazing around with great food wine, friends and family. This year, you can also have a try of wine stomping thanks to the team at Home Make It and order your supply of Bloody Mary flavoured vodka distilled by Craft and Co from the skins of our passata making.
