RODION & MAMMARELLA | GUEST MIX | 07/05/2024 | BRAIN FOOD RADIO

Rodion & Mammarella – 30 minute guest mix on Brain Food Radio – 10pm to 11:30pm (AEST) – 7th of May 2024 (guest mix from 11pm)

Rodion is from Rome. Mixmag/UK called him the “new genius of Italian Dance music”. Disco legend GIORGIO MORODER played a Rodion remix of his E=MC2 megahit during his first-ever DJ appearance in New York, at the age of 73.

Real name Ed Cianfanelli; Rodion has a very interesting past. Once a scholar at a famous Catholic music school, he was heralded as the prodigy piano student of his generation. His career path as the church organist was predicted and expected. He was their great hope. BUT, after a night out with friends, Mr Cianfanelli discovered electronic music and was soon hooked on the Italian nightlife. Inevitably the church hierarchy found out about his weekly rave escapades and were left with no choice but to ask him to leave.

On his new life path Rodion quickly snapped up some equipment from an old Italian house producer and started to combine his classical training with his new inspirations. The result is this unique, extremely emotional freaked out Italo Disco that’s ahead of its time. Somewhere between the depths of cosmic music and synthesized funk, mixed with the dramatic melodies of Italian horror movies. Heavily influenced by soundtrack composers such as Morricone and Goblin, by the Japanese science fiction animation soundtracks of the 70’s and by classical music and balearic club culture, Rodion is fully tuned into the extraterrestrial beat. In 2007 the boy from Rome released his debut album ‘Romantic Jet Dance’ on Gomma which became a favourite of DJs such as Prins Thomas and the DFA crew. During the last four years Rodion’ singles and remixes on Gomma, Eskimo, City Slang, Bearfunk and MBdisco (where he remixed his majesty GIORGIO MORODER), brought Rodion’s sound into the playlists of Franz Ferdinand, Erol Alkan, Francois K, Andrew Weatherall, Aeroplane, James Holden, Cosmo Vitelli and many others.

After collaborating on his ‘For Ever EP’ on Gomma (2010) with superstar crooners Louie Austen and Jeppe Kjellberg from Whomadewho in 2011 Rodion released spacey 12″ singles on Nang, Eskimo and Bang Gang DJs together with fellow club mates Bottin, Francisco and Golden Bug. In 2012 it has been the turn of two exciting EPs on La Belle from Paris and Slowmotion from Berlin, made in collaboration with maestro Fabrizio Mammarella of Clap Rules (Tiny Sticks, Bearfunk, DFA) and the sexiest doner man on earth, Khan of Finland. Rodion is also one half of the sweaty duo ALIEN ALIEN, together with Hugo Sanchez: in 2011 they released their debut ‘Black Guru’ EP on Slowmotion records. Their SAMBACA number quickly reached the kinkiest ballrooms all around the world, became a queer hymn and got featured in many compilations, including “Body Language vol.12” on Get Physical records. Rodion played live and DJed in many of the best clubs around the world, from Moscow to Paris, from Berlin to Istanbul, from Mexico City to New York, Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur. So expect him to sooner or later visit a ballroom close to your hometown…

Fabrizio Mammarella is an Italian selector, producer and label owner among many other things in the world of Music.

Boasting a discography that includes dozens of clubbing anthems, remixes, as well as successful collaborations with Lauer (as Black Spuma), Rodion, and Clap Rules; he is also the “one man band” in Telespazio, an infamous side project focusing more on experimental music.

Since his first release in 2004, Fabrizio has been constantly delivering hits for labels such as DFA, Permanent Vacation, Correspondant, Les Disques De La Mort, Future Boogie and his own imprint Slow Motion Music / Wrong Era records, leading the Italian Dance Wave movement for over ten years.

Fabrizio is also the head behind Emet, a record label centred on limited special releases crawling in the realm of weirdo electronic music, especially cut for the quirkiest and demanding dancefloors.

Fabrizio has played and hosted label nights at some of the best clubs and festivals around the globe, with regular nights in Berlin and his home country of Italy. He is definitely not moving in slow motion.
