Matthias drops into the Kiss studio for a chat and spin with Timmy from 5 to 6pm this Friday 17th November 2017.
Like a Romantic hero, Matthias Meyer is the protagonist of a musical Bildungsroman for our contemporary times. Born in the quiet small German town of Lueneberg, near Hamburg, his love and excitement for the hi-tech sounds of Detroit and Chicago drove him to eventually become part of prestigious club and brand Watergate, to tour all around the world, and even get a residency at Pacha Ibiza. His love of music encouraged him to seek out the excitement and hustle of nearby port town Hamburg and it ́s diverse club scene. A town with a notable tradition for allowing artists to thrive, Matthias Meyer soon found himself at the center of a newfound scene, organising parties to bring the electronic message out – sometimes to places without a proper dance scene – as part of the Sfunkt DJ collective. Alongside close friend and future production partner Patlac, Matthias began to play bigger and better venues, to more and more acclaim. Things started getting serious in 2006, after the release of his debut track ‘Reichenbach’, on Hamburg’s much-loved Liebe*Detail label. The track became a game changer, a tough and powerful big-room bomb, it summed up Meyer’s broad mixture of influences, the Detroit’s technical wizardry, but also the musicality and experimentation of Germany’s fresh faced electronic movement. After that, it was time for Tout Va Bien,’ the track that really defined Matthias Meyer’s current musical direction. His elevation to resident at Berlin’s legendary Watergate club cemented his status both at home and abroad. His highly successful Mix CD for Watergate in 2016 put him on the map for wider audiences and was very well received by press and critics as well. This has allowed him to play an extended tour with dates all around the planet, literally. This very summer will see Matthias as a resident at Hot Since 82’s Labyrinth series in legendary club Pacha Ibiza playing a whopping 10 shows on the white isle, plus a 2 week tour in Brazil playing hot clubs like Warung, D’edge, Vibe and Beehive. Not to forget Watergate ́s own 15th birthday and several festivals from Poland to Morocco. The constant search for the perfect sound keeps bringing Matthias Meyer tonew heights, production wise he has been delivering music on Watergate (Becuz EP) records and made a few remixes, of which Ryan Davis ́ Brun (Matthias Meyer Remix) by Anjunadeep was probably the most notable. For an artist like him, the great joy of his craft within the electronic culture is that – unlike so many other scenes – there ́s no need to play pop hits to get dance-floor recognition. Instead, he is able spin a long tale of rolling grooves, which evolve into emotive musical stories, which in turn provoke a different, inner relationship between DJ and dancer. Such is the author trademark of Matthias Meyer.
