Ahead of her national tour with Festival X in November – Laura King drops in from Geelong for a live Guest Mix on Kiss FM.
Laura King grew up just outside of Melbourne, in Winchelsea and the port town of Geelong on the South East coast of Australia. At the early age of 6, Laura lit a fire for music when she started singing and began playing the piano inspired by her Grandpa who introduced her to Celine Dion. From this tender age Laura had her heart set on becoming a performer, fueled with the help of her parents who got her involved in every performance and concert opportunity that came her way.
From these humble beginnings, Laura went on to own her first synthesizer in high school, the Korg R3 Vocoder synth. Performing at house parties with her synthesizer in tow, she discovered Daft Punk, Cut Copy, The Bloody Beetroots, Justice and The Presets and her love for more electronic music developed.
At the age of 18 (in Australia when it’s legal to go to a club) her clubbing career began and she bought her first pair of Pioneer CDJs and off she went, playing a residency at the local club St James where she began to spread her wings into the Melbourne scene a few years later.
Laura’s unique sound is high energy rave, tribal, that fuses techno, uplifting rhythms and catchy vocals into a voyage of sonic prowess. She’s an energetic DJ with a focus on a technical approach. She draws influence from Chris Liberator, A.P., Ben Sims, D.A.V.E. The Drummer, Cari Lekebusch, Nina Kraviz, Vladmir Dubyskin, Bjarki, Lucass P, Basswell, Julian Muller, AADJA, Roza Terenzi, Bad Boy Pete, Josh Inc, Radio Slave, DJ Deep, Asquith and quotes her favourite labels TRIP, Lobster Thermain, Hydraulix, Bound, Cluster Tracks, Stay up forever, Hardgroove and Bush Records.
When asked what she likes to listen to at home? Laura chills to old classics and disco including legends Chic, Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Peaches & Herb and Boney M.
Laura has had a massive 2018 and 2019. She has played across Australia and New Zealand for some of Australia’s best including the last 4 seasons as a resident at Piknic Electronik, PURE, Babylon Festival, Esoteric, Festival X, Elements, Habitat alongside Carl Cox, Nastia, Joseph Capriati, Thomas Schumacher, Marco Carola, Nina Kravitz, Enrico Sangiliano, Pan Pot, Reinier Zonneveld and more. In 2019 she played in New Caledonia, Berlin and Amsterdam as part of ADE and in 2022 after Covid, we will see her return to Europe and hopefully, North America.
When asked what have been her most memorable moments to date, she smiles and says… “Piknic for sure. I’ve been lucky to play the last four seasons so it feels good to be a part of a culture and community. It’s also the one show that my family comes to every year which is really special to me. The event and crowd is really open minded and aligned with my sound too, so I get to showcase the music I really love playing. Also my ‘All Day Rave’ events which have sold out both times. I design the whole event and play for 5 hours so I know that everyone who is coming is coming for the pure fact that they love dancing to my music. It feels really personal, intimate and flattering to perform to my fans.”
Laura plans to further develop her “All Day Raves” and with lockdowns in Melbourne in 2020 lasting more than 200 days, she began the journey of developing her own studio and experimenting with new equipment, sounds and teaching herself to write music, one of her personal goals. With newly formed Atom Management behind her (founded by Richie McNeill and Kyle Hand from Hardware), she has the tools, dedication and music passion to take her wherever her heart desires. The future is bright.
