JAMES VOLLER | GUEST INTERVIEW | FORUM | LEE-ANN JOY | MON 8:30-10 PM

The interview starts at approximately 00:54 mins

This Monday, FORUM will be interviewing the fabulous artist, James Voller.

James practice combines contemporary public art installation with photography, with a focus on the connection between architecture and social histories, in defining a sense of community in towns and cities.

His art installations transform objects and buildings by inserting, placing, or wrapping them with photographs that manipulate the formal qualities of photographic imagery to interact with architectural spaces to activate their architectural qualities, that in return, create moments of illusion that rethink everyday moments and spaces.

Recently, Voller’s work has examined assorted styles of domestic architecture, with a growing focus on ‘place’ and ‘architecture’ by combining rural and urban areas of Australia.

Since moving from New Zealand to Australia in 2012, James has exhibited and worked extensively to generate large photographic installations in galleries and the urban environment, with a focus on public spaces.

James holds a Master of Fine Arts from RMIT (2009) and a Master of Fine Arts (Research) from Monash University (2015).

Further experience has included a 2016 artist residency at the Kala Institute in Berkeley, California – supported by the Ian Potter Cultural Fund; and a 2016 RMIT Krems Residency Austria.

Additionally, James exhibited Streets of Gold at the Museum of London in 2012, and in 2008, had his first major exhibition at Christchurch Centre for Contemporary Art in New Zealand.

Creative highlights include winning the Peoples’ Choice award for Moving House Art Tram, as part of the Melbourne Festival in 2015.

In the past year, James has also undertaken multiple residencies in regional Victoria, including two Creative Gippsland, residencies.

A recent major commission was the large-scale installation Fibro Dreams in Sculpture by the Sea (Bondi 2018), funded by the Australia Council.
