From the freezing-work town of Feilding to the airwaves of Aotearoa, Damian McGregor—known to the music world as Sound Selector D Fresh—has lived and breathed the rhythm of New Zealand’s underground culture for over four decades.
His musical obsession sparked early with a childhood love for Reggae, quickly followed by the massive 1980s Kiwi breakdance explosion. By just 13 years old, Damian was already tearing up the adult pub circuit in live bands. At 15, he stepped behind the decks to DJ his first dance party right at the peak of the Public Enemy and New Jack Swing era.
An absolute pioneer of early university radio, Damian launched a reggae show on Massey University Radio in 1990. As the UK rave wave wafted south through imported vinyl, NME magazines, and legendary mixtapes, he became a champion for borderless underground music. He went on to host The Cyber Tech Network in ’91, diving deep into Acid House and Techno, followed by the iconic ’93 golden-era hip-hop show Da Underground with his Pandemonium crew. Pushing musical boundaries via the airwaves alongside the eclectic Housewives Choice, who also hosted their own show directly after, is where the two crews met. Safe to say, it was a musical family bond that has been firmly rooted from then til now.
Now, with over 40 years of musical ceremony under his belt, D Fresh’s love, gratitude, and reverence for soulful music are brighter than ever. Kei konei tonu. Ora tonu ana te mauri. The selector is still spinning, still grateful, and still bringing the heat.
So it is with great privilege we welcome D Fresh to the airwaves alongside Housewife’s Choice like old times, this Sunday 4th September 2026, for some chats, some music, and some serious education on the New Zealand reggae & music scene from the 70’s into the present.
