A weekend event will be held to celebrate all things queer and deaf.
The Deaf Queer community is a vibrant and intersectional group of individuals who identify as both Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing/Deafened/Deafblind and LGBTQIA . This unique identity blends Deaf culture, sign language, and queer expression, fostering a resilient and powerful community.
Deaf Queer individuals navigate both Deaf culture, rooted in visual communication and sign language, and Queer culture, which celebrates diverse identities and orientations. However, they are often underrepresented in both Deaf and LGBTQIA spaces. Mainstream LGBTQIA events may lack accessibility, while some Deaf-focused events may not fully address the needs of Deaf Queer people.
By amplifying Deaf Queer voices, we create inclusive spaces where everyone is valued for their rich, multifaceted identities. Sign languages, like Auslan, play a significant role in expressing gender, emotions, and cultural experiences. The Deaf Queer Festival is a crucial space where these identities are celebrated, fostering visibility, connection, and support in a safe environment for those often facing isolation or exclusion.
