Multicultural Arts Victoria is proud to present legendary artist and Grammy award nominee, Ustad Shujaat Khan, on his first ever Australian tour. 

Ustad Shujaat Khan will be playing a selection of shows around Australia to share the gift of Indian classical music with local audiences. Shujaat Kahn is one of the greatest North Indian classical musicians of his generation and he will be accompanied by local Tabla master, Jay Dabgar. The duo will play in Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and regional Victoria.

USTAD SHUJAAT KHAN – SITAR

Ustad Shujaat Khan belongs to the Imdad Khan gharana of the sitar and his style of playing sitar, known as the gayaki ang, is imitative of the subtleties of the human voice.

Shujaat Khan’s musical pedigree extends seven generations. He is the son and disciple of the great sitarist Ustad Vilayat Khan, and his grandfather, Ustad Inayat Khan, were all leading artists of their respective generations. Shujaat Khan has performed at prestigious music festivals in India and has performed in Asia, Africa, North America, and Europe.

Alongside his many notable performances, Khan has been a regularly featured artist at prestigious concert halls including Royal Albert Hall in London, Royce Hall in Los Angeles, and Congress Hall in Berlin.

Shujaat Khan has also collaborated with different genres of music. The Rain, an album featuring Shujaat Khan and the Indo-Persian Ghazal ensemble, was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2004 for “Best Traditional World Music Album”.

JAY DABGAR – TABLA

Recently finishing a very successful tour of Australia with the Grammy award winner and Padma Bhushan Pt. Vishwamohan Bhatt, local Tabla sensation Jay Dabgar will accompany Shujaat Kahn during his Australian tour.

Dabgar will bring 24 years of Tabla playing experience to these highly anticipated shows. Born into a family of Tabla makers, Dabgar learnt the instrument from his Gurus, Late Pt. Nandan Mehta and Pt. Pooran Maharaj at the famous Saptak School of Music in India. Dabgar’s skills are well known throughout Australia as well as internationally.
