Born of Caribbean heritage and based in the UK for most of her adolescent youth, Mama Char’s musical expression is a rich mix of international and home grown influences typical of her environment and musical landscape she grew up in, Including genres like dub, reggae, steppers and grittier sub-genres such as grime, 2-step, jungle and all things bass-heavy.
These influences shaping not just her musical preference, but also resonating as part of her cultural identity, while also drawing on sound system culture. Formerly known as Charms under another alias – The name Mama Char represents a dubbier more wholesome version of her herself where she can channel some of that lovers rock and roots vibe.
Mama Char has made Melbourne, Australia her new home base, and she brings with her a depth of knowledge and love of music to the Melbourne masses. No stranger to the festival stage, she knows all about the feel and the vibe of playing on a big stack of DIY speakers and is ready to come mash it up on the Housewife’s Choice Sound System on Fri 9th May!
