Wax on the Wire Radio show hosted by Nelo on Sunday mornings from 9-10:30. Nelo takes Kiss FM listeners on a journey of house music through the medium of vinyl, packed with guests & interviews from the global house music scene its not a show to be missed.
Nelo, originally from London, is an active DJ in the Melbourne scene and prolific in his productions in his Brunswick home Studio.
Nelo picked up the guitar from an early age, at just 6 years old he would stand on the door step of his guitar teacher and ring the door bell armed with his 3/4 sized guitar ready to learn.
Nelo quickly became frustrated in private guitar lessons and soon told his parents that he would teach himself. Although funny coming from a 6 year old, Nelo was true to his word and is still a self taught guitarist today.
Nelo became a fan of house music around the age of 12. He remembers listening to the 2007 Faithless Reverence Album on a family holiday with a friend. Ever since Nelo was hooked on electronic music. The eclectic nature of the Faithless sound lead Nelo down many musical paths and genres, however he would always come back to house music.
Years later Nelo would see Faithless live at V Fest, Wembley Arena, Wembley Stadium and various DJ sightings of Maxi Jazz and Sister Bliss over the years.
Nelo was straight into the music scene as soon as he arrived in Chichester West Sussex to study a degree in Adventure Education. His passions in extreme white water kayaking and canoeing were 50/50 with his music interests.
It was at the age of 18 Nelo decided that he wanted to become a DJ. He secured his first gigs at the university bar, playing anything from Hip hop, funk and soul to straight up house.
“it was the Soulfuric house, Head Candy, Disco Candy that really got me going…”
Later Nelo would support Radio 1 DJs on their university tours, Westwood, JK & Joel, DJ Spoony & Timmy Magic (the dream team) to name a few.
Back to London
After his University Days, Nelo found himself back in London. A sudden change in direction saw Nelo buying his first 1210’s and vinyl and revisiting House roots, DISCO!
“every Friday and Saturday night I’d lug my 1210s in flight cases and sometimes up to 3 bags of vinyl to go play a gig. People thought I was mad to be lugging all that around, I was having the best time though”
As well as playing house out to his London gigs, Nelo would also find gigs where he would play full length sets of just Disco, funk and rare groove
“its important to remember where musical genres actually come from, had it not been for funk, and disco, our musical landscape could have been a lot different”
After traveling around Australia (surfing mainly) Nelo moved to Melbourne and began networking in and around the underground electronic music scene.
Nelo got his Vinyl, 1210s & his mixers shipped to Melbourne, and now plays out mostly on vinyl.
Collaborating with Boudoir Resistance Nelo played some early shows at New Guernica bar and club in 2017. Nelo continues to collaborate with Boudoir Resistance running events at venues such as Loop Bar & Joey Smalls to name a few and can be found DJing at other venues such as Blue Diamond from time to time.
